Q. Can a child under the age of 6 be referred and how?
Yes, through Medicare for psychological intervention. Referral with a diagnosis from a GP/Psychiatrist or Paediatrician is required. Fee for service may apply if the diagnostic assessment is needed.
Q. How do I make a referral?
* ADHC funded service: Must have a diagnosis of a disability, 12-65 years and live in the Inner West and South East Sydney. Please see our Referral Form

Q. Can parents/caregivers/siblings be referred?
Yes, through Medicare (referral letter from GP/Psychiatrist/) for stress management, parent management training, problem solving or CBT treatment for anxiety, depression and other associated problems.
Q. What are the guidelines/criteria for Medicare referral?
Option 1: Up to five (5) sessions a year for people with chronic conditions and complex care needs managed by GP under the Enhanced Primary Care (EPC).
Option 2: Up to twelve (12) sessions a year for people with an assessed mental health disorder referred under GP Mental Heath Plan and/or a Psychiatrists Assessment and management plan; or from an eligible psychiatrist or paediatrician (mental disorder does not include: intellectual disability/mental retardation, dementia, delirium, tobacco use disorder).
Q. Do you do assessments and are they covered by Medicare? If not how much and does this include a report?
Some short or screening assessments can be conducted during the session. Full diagnostic assessments are not covered by Medicare but can be provided on a fee for service basis.
Q. What assessments do you do?
Diagnostic assessments of an Intellectual Disability, Autism Spectrum Disorders (incl. Asperger’s), assessment for the Guardianship Tribunal, Dual Diagnosis (ID+MH), Parental Stress, vocational and /or support needs assessments and many others.
Q. Is there any criteria for assessment?
No, however at this moment cognitive assessments can be completed only for clients 6 years and older.
Q. What sort of people do you cover in your service?
Individuals, families, services, staff working in a disability field; basically anyone.
Q. Does the person need to have an intellectual disability to be referred?
Only for ADHC funded services.
Q. What information do I need to bring to the first appointment?
The Medicare clients need to bring their Medicare card and referral letter and ensure the Health Care Plan is provided. A consent needs to be sought from individuals referred by a third person e.g. case manager.
Q. Does the disability have to be confirmed (reports etc.)?
Yes, for ADHC funded service (developmental, intellectual, physical or psychiatric disability ). If possible provide school reports, evidence of Centrelink payments e.g. Disability Support Pension. If relevant, previous reports can be sent prior to or brought to the session.
Q. Are you a private organisation?
Specialist Intervention Services is a part of Disability Services Australia, which is a not for profit (NGO) organisation funded both by both State and Commonwealth governments. 60% of our funding comes from Ageing, Disability and Home Care, Department of Human Services, NSW (ADHC).
